Wisdom Teeth Removal

Are you suffering from wisdom teeth pain?

Developing wisdom teeth may begin to cause complications such as tooth crowding, pain, infection or swelling. Wisdom teeth pain is frustrating at best. Left unchecked, infections and swelling can have a serious impact on your quality of life. Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common outpatient procedures in Australia.

The wisdom teeth, or third molars, grow at the back of your gums and are the last teeth to come through. We will always look closely at wisdom teeth development during the late teens through to the early 20s when the potentially troublesome teeth have less developed roots and are easier to extract.

However, wisdom teeth removal is not uncommon through the 30s and beyond. At the first sign of discomfort or pain from wisdom teeth, you should contact Aardent Dental Centre for a consultation. Our experienced dental health professionals will X-ray your mouth to determine whether wisdom teeth removal is necessary.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Because the four wisdom teeth develop after your other 28 teeth, there is not always room for them to come through straight. When wisdom teeth are blocked behind other teeth, partially erupted, or trying to come through at an angle they are known as

Impacted wisdom teeth are harder to clean so food and bacteria can easily accumulate around the partially erupted tooth,
leading to:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Bad breath
  • Bacterial infections
  • Abscess
  • Benign growths (in rare instances)

Schedule a check-up with our dental care team to determine if there is inadequate room for your wisdom teeth to erupt normally.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction

For the 96% of Australians with third molars, deciding to remove troublesome teeth is based on several factors including their risk to your health, the cost (which can be reduced by health insurance), long-term oral health outlook and more.
The good news is wisdom teeth extraction is a relatively straightforward procedure with a high percentage of fast recoveries.
Wisdom teeth removal generally includes:

Anaesthesia:
Local or general depending on the number of teeth needing to be removed and the mouth environment.
Extraction:
Performed by our qualified and experienced dentist, Dr Richard Williams.
Recovery:
Normally patients can expect to fully recover within 7-10 days, with a post-procedure routine to avoid infection.
If you are nervous about having teeth removed, you are certainly not alone. Our Victoria Park dentist team will walk you through the procedure from start to finish and answer any questions you may have.

Answering your questions about wisdom teeth removal
When should I get my wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth should be monitored as part of your ongoing dental care, beginning during childhood and continuing into adulthood. Has your dentist assessed your wisdom teeth? A proactive approach now helps prevent major problems later.

Be aware, not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. But timing is very important if they do need extraction. The ideal age for wisdom teeth removal is usually between 16 and 20 years old. At this stage, roots of the teeth are less entrenched.

Over the years, wisdom teeth that should have been removed can place you at risk for potential complications. The good news is, extraction can be carried out at any age. If concerned your wisdom teeth need attention, talk to our team.

The effects wisdom teeth have on dental health can be far-reaching. Teeth may become misaligned, cysts could form, with increased vulnerability to gum disease and tooth decay also a possibility. In some cases, sinus issues or jaw pain occur.

How much will wisdom tooth removal in Perth cost?

In the case of straightforward extractions, wisdom teeth can be removed in the dental chair. We have decades of experience with this procedure. The cost is generally about $250 per tooth. Most people have four wisdom teeth but the number can vary.

Often, people choose to have wisdom teeth extracted in hospital under a general anaesthetic. Cost of extraction can range from $250 to $410 per tooth, with further fees charged by the hospital and the anaesthetist.

For those with hospital cover, it is likely these costs will mostly be covered by your chosen health insurance. Just be sure to check expected coverage prior to the procedure. Your health insurance provider will confirm any out of pocket expenses. We can help you with this process.

When providing wisdom tooth extraction in Perth, our friendly dentists discuss the options so you can make the best choice for your dental needs. Occasionally, the positioning of wisdom teeth calls for complex care, and referral to an oral surgeon.

What is the recovery time after wisdom teeth extraction?

Recovery time can be impacted by difficulty of the extraction, general health, and adherence to the post-procedure care routine. For example, it is important to avoid strenuous activity for at least a week after having your wisdom teeth removed.

Following our post-care instructions reduces the chance of infection and ensures the best possible healing process. If you have any queries during recovery, the friendly team at Aardent Dental Centre is available to address your concerns.

Know that the first few days often involve some swelling, and minor to moderate pain. But within a few days, most people are able to return to school or work. It generally takes around a week to ten days for full recovery from the procedure. When dental assessment calls for wisdom teeth extraction, be proactive.

The procedure can save you from future dental issues and associated costs. If you still have questions, reach out to us. We want to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Insurance is accepted and can be processed immediately with our HICAPS facilities.
