Does your smile show a lot of gum? If the imbalance bothers you, we can help.

The good news is, potential health risks associated with excessive gingival display are uncommon. For most people, altering a gummy smile is about improving appearance.

Improving proportions through cosmetic dentistry has an aesthetic impact. Discover a smile you love in the mirror by creating a more balanced impression.

Why gummy smiles occur

Upon examination, our team can help determine the cause of your gummy smile. A wide range of factors could be responsible.

Lip

Have you heard the term hyperactive upper lip? When you smile, your muscles may be raising the upper lip higher, revealing more gum than others show when smiling.

Another possibility is a short upper lip that exposes more gum.

Teeth

A gummy smile can simply be the result of genetics, if your family is prone to naturally smaller teeth.

Likewise, improper eruptions are known to cause a gummy smile, meaning your teeth experienced issues during their initial emergence from the gum.

Alternately, your teeth length could have simply worn away.

Gums

Your gum tissue may have grown over your teeth, making your teeth appear smaller.

If oral hygiene has been neglected, your gums could be inflamed.

Medication can sometimes also result in gum overgrowth.

Jaw

Is the position of your jaw in play? Vertical maxillary excess occurs when you have experienced excessive upper jaw overgrowth.

Our experts can check if misalignment of the jaw is contributing to a gummy smile.

How we can help

Identifying what is causing your gummy smile will help us ascertain the best way to treat it. Depending on your situation, suggested treatment at Aardent Dental Centre may include the following options.

Cleaning

Resolving issues with gum health will eventually reduce gum swelling, and may be enough to improve a gummy smile.

If not, addressing inflammation with a professional clean is still a recommended start so that gum issues are dealt with before moving to another procedure.

Veneers and Crowns

Bring balance to a gummy smile by lengthening the appearance of your teeth, whether with porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.

Depending on the current condition of your teeth and gums, our experts can help pinpoint the perfect ceramic finish to transform your smile.

Gum Lift

If the issue is gum overgrowth, we can help by gently trimming excess gum tissue, carefully shaping the gumline to create a more proportioned effect.

Gum lifts can be done via a few techniques, including laser or manual removal. The process is designed to be as safe and quick as possible, with a focus on your comfort. Often we may direct you to a periodontist for this type of treatment.

Lip injectables

If the upper lip the source of your gummy smile? Fillers and injectables can be used to restrict the motion of your lip, or to increase lip volume for further gum coverage.

It’s worth noting while extremely convenient and effective, these options are generally short-term, requiring a return visit every few months.

Referral

Your dentist may decide specialist care is required. If an orthodontist or periodontist is needed, our team will explain why a specialist consult is recommended.
