Snoring can be one symptom of obstructive sleep apnoea, a sleeping disorder that potentially leads to serious health complications.

Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common form of sleep apnoea. Not every person who snores has the condition, but snoring is often an identifying symptom.

Keep in mind, you can have sleep apnoea without snoring. The key aspect of this sleeping disorder is affected breathing while sleeping.

A custom-fit mouth guard designed for sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is one way to help address the issue and reduce your sleep disturbances.

Why is untreated sleep apnoea dangerous?

During episodes, your breathing will stop and start while asleep—sometimes hundreds of times in one night. This can manifest in gasping, snoring, and a dry mouth in the morning.

You may experience broken sleep or insomnia, and wake during the night feeling breathless. Sufferers often fail to feel rested during the day, with the potential for a sore jaw or worn teeth due to grinding.

Sleep apnoea increases the risk of many serious conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Heart Disease
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Asthma
  • Stroke
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Hypoxia

Because your body isn’t getting proper rest, the effects of lethargy and brain fog can manifest. Headaches, memory issues and mood swings may occur. With impaired cognitive functions, the potential for accidents on the road or at work increases.

From reduced immunity to sexual dysfunction, sleep apnoea can have far-reaching impact on quality of life.

Who is at risk of obstructed sleep apnoea?

It’s believed 5% of adult Australians experience sleep apnoea, slightly higher in men than women and increasing with age.

By 30, an estimated 1 in 4 men experience a degree of sleep apnoea. Factors such as obesity and excessive alcohol intake also increase risk.

Our sleep apnoea solutions

Seeing a dentist for snoring, broken sleep or fatigue doesn’t seem an obvious choice. But our sleep apnoea dental services are designed to help improve sleep and therefore quality of life.

Sleep apnoea oral appliances are non-invasive. A custom-fit mandibular advancement appliance (MAD) created for sufferers opens the airway by pulling the jaw forward while still prioritising comfort.

Wearing this dental apnoea device during sleep will reduce snoring and the rate of breathing interruptions, lessening the potential health impact of the disorder.

Sleep apnoea management

Our sleep apnoea dentists are dedicated to comprehensive care. After examining your head, neck, teeth and mouth, we can organise an at-home sleep study which will be assessed by a sleep physician. Once we have their report and recommendations we will discuss treatment possibilities with you.

The initial consults usually includes a full history and the provision of some questionnaires to be filled out at home. If an applicance is indicated then we will take casts of your teeth and mouth, as well as a bite registration. The goal is to ascertain required movement of the jaw during sleep.

Over following months you can adjust how far the appliance brings your lower jaw forward. We will track overall progress in addressing your sleep apnoea.

You can trust us to stay up-to-date on sleep apnoea treatments and research so you reap the benefits of a truly personalised solution.
